How PBIS Instructional Strategies Can Influence Student Engagement

School districts across the United States are using multiple systems to improve teacher instruction and student engagement. The problem at a middle school in North Texas is that it unknown how teachers Positive Behaviors Interventions Supports (PBIS) engage students. purpose of this basic qualitative study was explore sixth-grade PBIS instructional strategies students, as well teachers’ perceptions for engaging students classroom. PBIS, along with Watson’s behavioral theory Vygotsky’s cognitive development theory, served conceptional framework study. research questions concerned used This encompassed open-ended semi-structured interviews nine participants who were certified teachers, taught core subject, their classrooms. data collected analyzed through process open, axial, selective coding. Three themes emerged: effective environment, support, learning leakages. Teachers may benefit from positive social change by gaining insight needed better meet needs all systems. Students enhance overall experience turn, improving academic achievement.
